I decided that I want to change my mindset to growth mindset, and since the day I have changed it from a fixed to a growth mindset. I have grown in many ways, especially in my learning and in my everyday life. Different mindsets can change people lives for better or for worse. Most people have developed a fixed mindset because they don’t want people to tell them that they are not good at something, but there are 4 in 10 people who have growth mindsets and are open to new learning experiences. Dweck claims there are two types of mindsets. The first one is a fixed mindset which is when people believe that intelligence is a fixed trait, meaning that they believe that they have a certain amount of intelligence and that amount can’t change. The second one is a growth mindset, which is opposite to a fixed mindset. People with a growth mindset believe that they can grow and develop their intelligence. They also believe that intelligence is not a genetic trait , but it is acquired through education and learning how to accomplish a task. There are many ways that a fixed mindset can affect our daily lives; for example, in our everyday lives, an average of 70 percent of people giving up on what they need to do on a daily basis, thinking â€Å"I don’t think I am up for this, or this is all I can do. † On the other hand, 30 percent of people don’t give up until they get what they want, thinking â€Å"I will learn from this. † Dweck also talks about three mindset rules. For fixed mindsets, it is important to always look wise at all times. Many fixed mindset people care about grades, but, on the contrary, the growth mindset only cares about learning. The second one is to put effort in everything you are doing. If you are a fixed mindset you probably think being clever is natural, so when you get a bad grade you think, â€Å"Well I am not good at this subject. † You fail that subject because you did not put any effort in it. A person with a growth mindset will think the harder you work at something, the better you get at that thing. Finally, the third rule is facing setbacks; when fixed mindsets decide that they are not good at something, this means that they will never be good at it. Meanwhile, a growth mindset person will think that any mistake is part of learning. Equally important is how praise can harm people. Dweck states that when your child gets a good grade in one class and a bad grade in another, your resound should be, â€Å"keep up the effort in your more difficult course. You’ll get it eventually. † This allows you to properly encourage your child, and help them create growth mindsets. As I read through the article, I made a certain discovery that I am a fixed mindset because I always thought that I was born with the little amount of intelligence that I have. Intelligence should be natural, and I would question why I don’t have any. Back when I was in high school, my math teacher gave us a math test worth 60 percent of our grade. As I was solving the problems on my test, I got stuck on some of the questions. I was only able to answer 14 of the 60 questions. At the end of the test the teacher said, â€Å"I can give some of you extra time if you need it. † I thought to myself, â€Å"What is the point of the extra time. It’s not like I know how to solve the problem anyway, and it’s not like I want to get an ‘A’ any ways. I am good with a ‘C’, and besides I am not born with math intelligence like my big sister anyway. † This mentality I had back in high school has affected me so that now I have to retake the class in college. I realized I had the ability to develop and use a growth mindset back when I was in 12th grade in high school. My English teacher told me, â€Å"If you get interested in things you want to learn as well as the things don’t want to learn, without thinking about grade you will surely be successful in life. † After hearing this I thought to myself, â€Å"So I should be learning, rather than worrying about my grade. † Since then I was able to learn more about things. For example, I was able to pass my math class and not worry about my idiomatic teacher who always told the class that if we don’t get what he is teaching we will never get it because we were not meant to get it, but since I did not let what he said get to me, I got an A out of his class. My growth mindset started in Skyline High School, when I was told by my counselor that if I did not pass my CAHSEE exams I would not be able to graduate. So I thought to myself, â€Å"What am I doing wrong that I did not pass my exams? † I remember that every time that I got stuck on a hard question, I would move on to the next easy one, and did not make any effort to solve it. On the last exams when I got stuck on any problem, I would go over it again until I got the right answer. I passed both of my exams, and I was able to walk the stage. I was assured that without doubt my growth mindset kept me go through my challenge. When we see a student who gets a higher score than us, we assume that he/she is naturally good at the subject, but we never really look at how hard they have worked to be a good student. If I happen to get an â€Å"F† in any of my subjects, I will make a quick assumption that I don’t have any intelligence on that subject. I would not make an effort to look at what I did wrong. I would just walk away from it. On the other hand, if a person with a growth mindset makes a single mistake on any subject they are taking, they would go over it until they get it right. Why? Because they believe that working hard and growing your intelligence is the key to success in life. I understand a lot about myself because this article, it let me identify what the problem is. I relate the black and white theme in this movie to color theory. Black and white are opposite ends of the value scale, or color sphere. These two are highly contrasting colors, which cause strain and tension when together. This could explain Eva and Willie. Eva, who seems to be better alone, unlike Willie who has to have his friend Eddie. These two characters cause tension when put together. Eva feels confined when put into the prison-like situations that Willie puts her in. For example, being left alone in apartments, and hotels by herself. These two characters together cause the same contrasting effects of the two colors black and whit e. This film begins with Eva arriving in New York to stay with her cousin Willie. Willie lives by himself in an unkempt apartment. Eva arrives to Willies place, but Willie does not really make her feel welcome. He feels like he has to be some sort of babysitter. Eva is left in the apartment by herself feeling lonely and bored. One day she leaves the apartment and goes to the store. When she returns she shows Willie what she shoplifted. Willie is impressed that Eva did this sort of crime in the unsafe neighborhood that he lives in. "The Yellow Wallpaper", A Descent Into Madness In the nineteenth century, women in literature were often portrayed as submissive to men. Literature of the period often characterized women as oppressed by society, as well as by the male influences in their lives. "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman presents the tragic story of a woman's descent into depression and madness because of this oppression. The narrator's declining mental health is reflected through the characteristics of the house she is trapped in and her husband, while trying to protect her, is actually destroying her. The narrator of the story goes with her doctor/husband to stay in a colonial mansion for the summer. The house is supposed to be a place where she can recover from sever postpartum depression. "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a fictionalized account of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's own postpartum depression. According to critic Valarie Gill, "Gilman attached the nineteenth century's configuration of private space as woman's domain and its attendant generalizations about femininity. Gilman seeks to blur the distinction between private and public life. Gilman unflaggingly urged her audience to consider their logic in assigning women to the home. The composition of home life altered radically between the beginning and final decades of the nineteenth century" (17). The narrator loves her baby, but knows she is not able to take care of him. The structure of an organization can be regarded as a frame work for getting things done. It consists of unit, functions, divisions, departments and formally constituted work, teams into which activities related to particular processes, projects, products, markets, customers, geographical areas, or professional disciplines are grouped together. The structure indicates who is accountable for directing, coordinating and carrying out these activities and defines management hierarchies, the chain of command as who is responsible to whom for what at each level in the organization. The organization has to design the organization structure. It may be hierarchical or flatter. It may, also, be, traditional, line and staff organization, Functional organization Or modern viz, Project organization, Matrix organization etc. Weber‘s bureaucratic theory emphasized the need for a hierarchical structure of power. It recognized the importance of division of labor and specialization. In functional organization a form of departmentalization in which employees engaged in functional activities such as marketing or finance are grouped into one unit. In divisional organization under the structure, activities and people are grouped into divisions according to products, market or a combination of both with each division self-managed and operating as a profit centre. However, there is overall control which comes from the corporate headquarters. In here, financial as well as R&D activities are centralized in order to profit from economies of scale and reduced cost. In project organization a team is formed temporarily which works with restricted resources within a defined time to accomplish a certain task and after the task is achieved the team is disbanded. Matrix structure involves dual hierarchy that is balance between project and functional departmentalization. In a matrix organization each employee reports to both a functional or divisional manager and to a project or group manager. Research has shown that structure plays a vital role in human resource performance, for example, the level of management, grouping of people and tasks will determine the amount of relationships and co-ordination in the organization. However, structure does not act in isolation as the link to performance. According to Galbraith and Nathanson, they noted that high performance is achieved by congruence between structure and other variables such as culture, reward system and business strategy. Therefore, organization should align all these factors in order to enhance organizational performance. Organizational culture is the pattern of values, norms, beliefs, attitudes and assumptions that may not have been articulated but shape the ways in which people behave things get done. There are a number of ways in which to classify different types of organizational culture. Handy (1981) describes four main types of organizational cultures * The power culture is one with a central power source that exercises control. There are few rules and the atmosphere is competitive. A power culture is frequently found in small entrepreneurial organization and relies on trust, empathy and personal communication for its effectiveness. Control is exercised from the centre by the selection of key individual. * Role culture is one in which work is controlled by procedures and rules and the role description, is more important than the person who fills it. Role culture rests on the strength of strong organizational pillar. For example, finance, purchasing and production. * Task culture is job oriented or project oriented. It is one in which the aim is to being together the right resources and people and utilizes the unifying power of the group. * Person culture is one in which the individual is the central point. The organization exists only to serve and assist the individuals in it. For example architects, doctors or consultant. Culture is an important factor in successful technology, implementation, innovation, mergers, job satisfaction, organizational success and team effectiveness and to the importance of determining whether organization has an organic or mechanistic culture. Culture impacts most aspects of organizational life, such as how decision are made, who makes them, how rewards are distributed, who is promoted, how people are treated, how the organization responds to its environment and so on. Culture is clearly an important ingredient of effective organizational performance. Chatman and Cha refer to the use of the following three managerial tools for managing and changing culture and if Abbey’s human resource management follow these tools they should succeed in achieving its goals and objectives. In order to meet the effectiveness objectives of management control, Abbey National’s human resource plan should be formulated in such a way that it conforms to the organizational strategies and corporate plan. At the micro level, Abbey National needs to do career planning for employees and succession planning for key positions in the organization. At a macro level, Abbey National needs to carry out workforce planning and salary planning; the nature of the human resource planning process is primarily dependent upon the organizational size and the hierarchical structure within the organization. For the Abbey National‘s human resource plan to be successful, it has to be supported fully by the top management, the Abbey National‘s human resource department, and the line managers. Recruitment and selection, training and development and compensation management are some of the areas over which the organization needs to exert control. The returns on the investment made one the training activities can also be measured by using quantitative tools like benefit to cost ratio. What’s effective about this method is that it has brought some positive changes to some Health care facilities. There are three factors that have been constantly tested to improve patient care. These factors are: 1) fall rates 2) call light usage and 3) overall patient satisfaction.†¦show more content†¦However, if this patient was removed, the data would show a significant decrease in call usage. Also, there was no significant difference between the pre-intervention and the post-intervention phase for patient satisfaction, but there is subjective evidence from the hourly rounds of nursing leaders, like the nursing manager (NM), that patient satisfaction increased. There were certain limitations that affected the final results of the study. The sample size was too small of a number. Because of the small sample size, there was an outlier that impacted the study to a higher scale tha n if there was a larger sample. This outlier was the delirious patient, who had used the call button 187 times in a 6 day period. Another limitation was the lack of effort from the nursing staff in the experimental group to practice the hourly rounding protocol. This specifically affected the data for both the call light usage and fall rates. According to Olrich, Kalman, Nigolian, â€Å"technical difficulties with the call-light date collection system did not allow weekly data†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ reports of falls were not received until almost 4 months into the rounding process† (Olrich, Kalman, Nigolian, p.26). In order to effectively make this strategy work, there have to be a 100% involvement and commitment from all nurses and staff.
